A criticism a day keeps ideas away.

A friend of yours asks for help on a job.  As soon as you start to help, your friend explains how you’re doing it wrong.

“Not that way.  That won’t work.”

“You’re going to screw it up!”

How long does that go on?  How does it end?  Well, ideas are less patient than you, but more polite.  They will never tell you where you can stick your job.  They will just go off looking for a boss that appreciates ideas.

So any time you think someone is coming up with too many ideas, here are a few incantations to cure creativity.

Incantations to cure creativity

It won’t work.

It’s been tried before.

We can’t afford it.

Nobody does it that way.

It takes too long.

It’s too hard.

That’s a stupid idea.

Let’s not do anything.  It's safer.

These incantations will turn off almost any flow of ideas.  They can work on your adversaries.  On your friends.  On your children, On you.  They will only fail with a skilled Thinkerer, who will write down the objections, put them with the Choosing Clipit and later give them all the consideration they deserve.
