Self-Awareness in the Moment

Here we offer several tools to help you start paying more attention to the quiet parts of your brain. After you get started, you will adjust them to suit you.

Meditation.  An ancient tradition that we present with a modern twist.  We also call it clearing your head and gathering your thoughts.   That’s for people who don’t like ancient traditions.

Self-awareness.  The practice of paying attention to the non-verbal modules of your brain.  The basic method, often called meditation, is to turn off or occupy your language system so that it does not drown out the messages from the other parts of your brain.  Other methods rely on subliminal perception or imagination.

Cuepons.   A modern tradition with a modern twist.  We start with the tradition of clipping coupons.  But how do people find the coupons they want to clip?  Or, more generally, how do people find things when they examine something like a newspaper page?  Instead of carefully reading every heading, people notice things that they are interested in.  If you look at a page of coupons, you will easily notice items that you are interested in.

The items you notice are not necessarily items that you intended to get.  They may be items that you once thought about buying and forgot.  They may be items that respond to some need you felt or remind you of something you were intending to do.

What you see is providing a cue to something in your head that has been on the back burner.  The cue sparks it into your attention.  Psychologists sometimes call this subliminal perception

You can use Cuepons to spark subliminal perception.  Look over a page of Cuepons. Some items will catch your eye.  What catches your eye probably is making a connection with something in the back of your mind.  Do a little detective work in your brain.  Ask yourself where that item takes your mind.

If your mind wanders, follow it.
Maybe it knows something you don’t.
