Know what time it is. Sometimes you work on long term goals. Sometimes you just play. Decide what you intend to be doing in the next hour. |
|
| Tell your brain what you want to get done in the here and now. Distractions have an advantage over long term goals. Distractions are in the here and now. Long term goals are in the there and then. You bring long-term goals into the here and now by breaking them into sub-goals. Joblets. Choose a subgoal that you can finish in the next hour. |

See your product. Plan for a concrete product. The product may be notes about things your are reading. Or an outline of plans. It does not have to be a finished product. It does have to be something you can touch and see. Decide how you will know when the joblet is done. Decide what will satisfy you.
How can you find satisfaction Don't just talk to yourself. Imagine the product
The product might be: Put the lists where they will remind you. |

Set up cues. Distractions draw their power from cues. So do attractions. If you want to set your goals, you have to set the cues. If you let distractions set the cues, you let distractions set your goals. It is your choice.
A distraction is just an attraction to another part of your brain. Start making the product at the beginning of the job. If it is a list, for example, get the paper out. Put a title on it. Use that as a cue. Put it right in front of you. Let it distract you from the distractions.
Distractions are in the here and now. |
Strengths behind focus |
|
Give your brain a change. Don’t try to focus on the same kind of job for
hours. After a quarter hour, you probably want to give your brain a rest stop.
Think of this as you do with strength training. You shift the work around
to different muscle groups.
If you don't know what else to do, use Semi-Structured Brainstorming with this question: "How will I know when I have finished this job?" |
Attention span Know what to expect. |
