Holodeck1 -- Shot Script  -- Planning Draft

Notes: Scenes and Cast

Scenes: Hall of starship, astrometrics lab, Corridor to holodeck, command deck of enterprise (original), garage, Pizza place

Suit roles: (All in appropriate business dress, except possibly Innovator.)

 1. Skeptic, canter, knows the way we've always done it

 2. Accountant --  Must cost a lot. Ask cost questions -- Will be swayed by price comparisons and time cost

 3. Boss -- Take charge, make decisions, sit in Captain's chair, undecided-- considers effect on work

 4. Socializer -- no water cooler work.  Initially thinks web is isolating,    Will be swayed by pizzaria.

5. Innovator -- Young, comes up with new ideas.  Sees new advantages.

 6. Mr. Walden -- Starfleet officer, in uniform.  Helpful, informed. (Script will provide questions he will answer after checking with Ches).  May speak a bit like Spock

Scene 1  Hall by door of astrometrics lab

VO: Stardate 2008.5.  We are hosting a contingent of business men from earth who are exploring the possibility of using a holodeck for virtual business meetings.  We have no business facility programmed into our holodeck, but I have asked Mister Walden, our science officer to show them what our holodeck can do.

Skeptic:  I don't think we are going to find meeting facilities on a starship.

Boss -- I understand Mister Walden can run the holodeck and show us what they have.  He should be here in the astrometrics lab.

ACTION:  Boss walks to door.  It opens.  They stand at the door.  Mister Walden, back to the door, turns and greets them.

Walden: Good day.  I am Science Officer Walden.

Boss: Good Day Mister Walden.  Let me introduce my associates:  (names TBD)

Walden: I am gratified to meet you.  I understand that you are interested in seeing what the holodeck can do for virtual business meetings.  If you will follow me, I will show you to the holodeck facility.

Scene 2

ACTION: Group follows Walden down the hall, around the corner and to the holodeck door

During walk:

Innovator:  How does a holodeck work?

Walden:  It carries the objects needed to create scenes in its inventory.  The objects are walls, floors, chairs, tables, and the like.  You select a scene.  It unpacks the objects for that scene and places them where they need to go to create the scene.

Socilaizer:  I wish I could get that kind of service from my movers the next time I change apartments.

Innovator:  How does it know where to put things?

Walden:  The scene starts with a builder creating an ordinary three-dimensional virtual scene.  The next step is some technical script work that let the holodeck pack in the objects while it makes notes to itself about where everything goes.  Much like what you wish your movers would do.

Exposition

Scene 3

ACTION Door opens, group enters.  People stand around the holodeck circle in the center.  Placement TBD -- to fit locations in Enterprise deck

Skeptic:  Not a much of a meeting room here.  Even if it had seating, it wouldn't hold a big crowd.

Walden:  The space will expand as needed.

Accountant:  We could use some expanding in our offices.

Walden: I will activate the holodeck now.  This scene is probably not what you would use for a meeting, but it is a favorite of our visitors.

ACTIONWalden Rez Enterprise command deck.

All:  Wow!

ACTION Boss immediately sits in command chair.   Skeptic and accountant sit in forward chairs.  Others sit in the chairs around the circular desk.

Skeptic: Pretty crowded.

Soclializer:  The chairs are all fixed facing away from the center.  Not good for a meeting.

Walden: (Rezzes chair near turbolift and sits in it, facing captain chair.)  We can easily add other chairs and place them where we want.  (Moves chair, still sitting in it.)   Or we could install new chairs if we owned the scene.

Accountant:  I worry about the cost of owning ascene like this.

Innovator:  This might be an interesting place for a brainstorming session.

Accountant:  We could put the powerpoint screen up in front.

Boss:  Is it possible to display what we want on the screen up front?

Walden:  If you have the proper authority on the land, you can display a video or a web page.  Other things may be available in the future.  That capability is available anywhere and is unrelated to the holodeck.

Boss:  (Stands up.)  Well, let’s move on to another room.  This might be interesting as a place for brainstorming, but it is a bit crowded.

ACTION: All stand up

Interest catching

Scene 4.

Walden:  We don’t have to go anywhere.  The meeting room will come to us.  This one has more space.

(Walden clears current scene and activates next scene, garage.)

Skeptic:  Meeting in a garage?

Walden: We had a meeting here just yesterday.

Innovator:  Maybe about designing a garage.

Walden:  Actually about my car.

(Walden rezzes car.  On flat, as to look at.  Lights off.)

Walden: This is a custom (Insert details).  I was just showing it to some friends.

(Walden opens doors and lifts top.)

Boss: (Sitting in driver's seat.)  I suppose it does make sense for a meeting about a custom car.

Accountant: What does a car like this cost?

Walden: This one cost about twelve dollars.

(Others gather around.  Camera picks up some interior detail.  )

TBD: (Comment about interior detail.)

Walden:  We do like to have meetings in places that fit the agenda.

Skeptic:  This garage doesn't fit our agenda.

Innovator:  Maybe it does.  It has enough space for a big meeting.  We would just need a rework of the interior.

Skeptic: More expense.

Walden: If there is an existing scene that suits your needs, you could buy one for less than twenty dollars.

Boss: I think we have seen enough to conclude this is worth considering.   Can we get some rough ideas about costs?

Walden:  I can only give you information based on my experience.  Lets go to place where we can have an informal chat.

Show rez of objects supporting meetings.

Scene 5. Pizza place

ACTION: Walden clears meeting room and selects pizza place.  Boss sits near Star Wars poster.  Others sit nearby.  Accountant sits near Walden.

(Insert small talk)

Accountant: All this looks pretty expensive.  What costs are we looking at for a meeting of, say, twenty-five people?

Walden:   The number of people is irrelevant.  The basic account is free and that is all you would need to attend the meeting.   Someone representing the company would need to have the necessary authority to build things in a land parcel.  The main thing you would need is someone who knows their way around this virtual reality.
Accountant (interested):  So we could put 500 people in here for the same price as 50?  I need more cost estimates.  How much is the representative going to cost?

Walden:  I don’t know, but I have some contacts.  Let me check and see if we can set up another meeting.

Dan P -- Cost of turnkey arrangement?

Scene 6.

Boss:   I guess it's about time to get back to the office.  (stands)

Innovator:  We are at the office.

Socializer: We never left home.

Accountant (musing):   Low cost meeting.

Skeptic:  I'm still not sure we can hold a business meeting here.

Accountant:  I think we just did.
